The Richmond, Virginia community is mourning the unexpected passing of Stockton Tyler Watson, Sr., who died peacefully at his home on May 28, 2025. Born on June 14, 1968, in Virginia Beach, Stock was a man whose life was marked by his passions, his unwavering love for family and friends, and his exceptional ability to touch the lives of everyone he met. His sudden departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, loyalty, and genuine spirit will continue to inspire.
Stock Watson’s journey began in Virginia Beach, where he spent most of his life and where he developed his character and passions. A proud graduate of Norfolk Academy’s Class of 1986, Stock was recognized early on for his athletic talent and leadership qualities. During his years at Norfolk Academy, he excelled as a multi-sport athlete, demonstrating natural prowess in football, basketball, and lacrosse. His athleticism and competitive spirit carried over into his college years at Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated in 1990.
At Hampden-Sydney, Stock continued to pursue his love of lacrosse with vigor, serving as the team captain in his senior year. His leadership on and off the field exemplified his dedication, perseverance, and ability to motivate others. Beyond sports, Stock’s interests ranged from music and film to politics, showcasing his diverse passions and insightful personality.
One of Stock’s most cherished pursuits was broadcasting lacrosse games at Norfolk Academy and Hampden-Sydney College, a passion he shared with his close friend, coach, and mentor Tom Duquette. His love for sports extended beyond competition; it was also about community, storytelling, and celebrating the game and its players.
Yet, above all his pursuits, Stock’s greatest love was for his family. He was a devoted father to his sons, Roddy, Mac, and Stock, and took immense pride in their accomplishments and growth. He often spoke of his sons with love and excitement, eager to watch them flourish into young men. His family was his greatest joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Those fortunate enough to know Stock describe him as a truly extraordinary individual. His ability to make others feel important, welcomed, and loved was unparalleled. A kind and caring soul, Stock was honest, sincere, and possessed an impeccable sense of humor and storytelling. His loyalty and steadfastness to his “people” made him a trusted confidant and friend to many.
His warmth and genuine nature left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Whether through his engaging conversations, his infectious laughter, or his supportive presence, Stock embodied the qualities we all hope to aspire to — compassionate, authentic, and deeply committed to those he loved.
A celebration of Stock’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18th, at Galilee Church, located at 3928 Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach. This gathering will provide family, friends, and community members an opportunity to honor his memory, reflect on his impactful life, and find comfort in shared stories and love.
Though his physical presence is no longer with us, Stock Watson’s legacy endures through the lives he touched — especially his children, who carry forward his values of kindness, loyalty, and love. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of living authentically, loving deeply, and inspiring others through our actions.
